Plant regeneration
and organ formation

We study the cellular and molecular mechanisms of plant regeneration, adventitious root formation, and transcriptional regulation.

Arabidopsis root tissue with cyan and gold fluorescence, showing individual cells and nuclei

Research

Our research examines how cells acquire organ identity and establish tissue patterns during regeneration and de novo organ formation. We combine developmental genetics, microscopy, and genomic analysis in Arabidopsis and tomato.

Root regeneration and cell identity

We investigate how intercellular signaling, plasmodesmatal connectivity, and sugar transport regulate root tip regeneration. Our work examines the coordination of cell identity transitions, tissue repatterning, and metabolic resource allocation after injury.

Adventitious root formation

We study the specification of root founder cells and the initiation of shoot-borne roots in tomato. We examine the conserved genetic programs that regulate above- and belowground root initiation.

Cis-regulatory sequence evolution

We identify conserved noncoding sequences across plant genomes and investigate their roles in developmental gene regulation. Our work combines comparative genomics and functional analysis of cis-regulatory elements, with an interest in synthetic promoter design.
